Managing Editor - AJOT

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the national professional association established in 1917 to represent the interests and concerns of occupational therapy practitioners and students of occupational therapy, is seeking an AJOT Managing Editor to add to their team.  

Position Summary
The AJOT Managing Editor is responsible for the development and production of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, from article submission through online publication, including managing digital platforms and tools, overseeing freelancers and vendors, and maintaining quality and schedule.

Position Specific Duties

  • Develops roadmap and corresponding budget for AJOT with other AOTA staff and stakeholders. Leads and/or collaborates with other AOTA teams to create efficiencies and adhere to overall strategic plan goals, operational plan priorities, and overarching content strategy.
  • Supports and collaborates with the Editor-in-Chief, who is appointed for 3-year terms, with the submissions, review, and production process, and with promoting the journal to internal and external audiences. Coordinates AJOT Editor search and acts as the AOTA liaison to the Editor.
  • Manages the content lifecycle, from submission through production and online publication. Implements processes and workflows for effective content production and review for AJOT so they are operational, updated, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Serves as the primary liaison representing the journal on AOTA’s cross-functional content strategy team, to ensure content integration and promotion across the Association.
  • Recruits, develops, and tracks teams, including Editorial Board/subject matter experts, freelancers/consultants, vendors, and AOTA staff to edit content and ensure smooth operation of AJOT
  • Maintains digital platform for AJOT. Includes identifying, evaluating, and contracting with vendors; and supporting digital content development and delivery strategies functionalities, connections, and reporting data. Ensures that all AJOT manuscript submission system administrative functions are operational, complete, and updated. 
  • Manages the day-to-day work of AJOT’s freelancers, consultants, and vendors; monitors subscriber needs and revenue with Membership. Tracks and submits invoices as they arrive.
  • Coordinates and tracks the typesetting of manuscripts through external vendor.
  • Tracks the status of articles in each issue (up to 3 issues at once).
  • Responds to or forwards customer service queries about AJOT.
  • Works collaboratively with the Website and IT teams to ensure alignment across strategy, technology integrations, and user experience (UX). 
  • Reports on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to usage, citations, views, subscriptions, and advertising per established schedule.
  • Researches and collaborates with appropriate staff and consultants in the analysis of scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publishing, education, and health care trends and AOTA member needs to inform changes and updates to current and potential AOTA digital publications and products. Identifies procedures, processes, and freelancers and staff to improve efficiency, quality, and schedule to increase opportunities.
  • Updates the AJOT platform with new content (via continuous publishing), including key words, taxonomy terms, and other identifiers. Updates AOTA website with AJOT articles that will drive readers to the AJOT site and reinforce the value of this member benefit.
  • Maintains the AOTA style manual exceptions for AJOT. Manages changes in content and functionality to the AOTA Press online redacting/plagiarism-checking programs.

 

Education/Experience/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in related field.
  • Professional certification and/or American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential is a plus.
  • Silverchair experience highly preferable
  • XML experience highly preferable
  • Sitecore experience desirable
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive publications experience.   
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of digital and print STM publishing fields, as well as significant familiarity with a variety of subject areas and/or specialized skills in one area, including the behavioral and social sciences and health care and/or Association Management.
  • A different combination of formal education and experience will be considered.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively by building relationships across all departments and levels.
  • Must demonstrate good judgement and mature business skills, a high level of organizational and time management skills, and flexibility in competently juggling competing priorities and changing expectations. 
  • Skilled in critical thinking, analysis, and determining project direction. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
