Call for papers: Occupational therapy and mental health needs of autistic clients

Guest Editors: Claudia Hilton, PhD, OTR, MBA, FAOTA, and Anne Kirby PhD, OTR/L

Deadline for submission: February 1, 2022.

Tentative issue: March/April 2023

Occupational therapists frequently collaborate with individuals on the autism spectrum across the lifespan to address functional goals and valued occupations. Recent surveys and listening sessions with autistic individuals have identified mental health as a priority area for the autistic community. This special issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT) will highlight the needs of the autism community with regard to mental health services and the role occupational therapists can play in addressing those needs. This issue especially seeks findings from empirical studies, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses that can be used to inform occupational therapy practice or policymaking decisions.

Call for authors: Health Policy Perspectives column

Do you have a perspective on occupational therapy practice in the changing health care system? What federal, state, or local policy questions are critical to occupational therapy? Do you have thoughts about the larger world of health care reform that relates to state, federal, or local policy?

The AJOT Health Policy Perspectives column provides an opportunity for expression of thoughtful opinions. The column is a forum for views; calls to action for the profession on practice, education, outreach, and research; and perspectives on how occupational therapy and health care policy intersect. Original research is not required, although preference is given to articles that reference published or ongoing research.

Interested authors should contact Susan Cahill, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, column editor, at scahill@aota.org, with a short paragraph describing the proposed column. Manuscripts should be submitted through the AJOT manuscript processing system.
