Assembly of Student Delegates

A monthly e-newsletter written by students, for students created by the Assembly of Student Delegates.

An opportunity arranged by ASDSC for students to connect with members of the AOTA Board of Directors (BoD) or members of the ASDSC to discuss important, current issues within the occupational therapy profession.

Through online teleconferencing, leaders host a 1-hour discussion with a focus on one or more of the following topics:

• Advocacy and Current Factors Affecting Occupational Therapy

• Leadership Opportunities for Students

• Transitioning to New Practitioner

• Experiences in Doctoral Capstone

• Experiences in Fieldwork

• Experiences in Clinical Practice

How to set up an ASD to Classroom session

Send the following information to ASD@aota.org 3 to 4 weeks in advance of when you would like to host the presentation:

• 3 preferred days and time availability

• Topic(s) of interest (see above)

• Your school name and time zone

• Your contact information

• If you have access to a teleconference program, list the name of the preferred program (e.g., Skype, Adobe Connect, Zoom) and user/log-in information. If you do not have access to a teleconference program, let us know so that we can set up a connection for you.

An ASDSC member will contact you after you have submitted your request and will contact ASDSC members about availability. Once the teleconference is scheduled, the school can correspond directly with the ASDSC member about meeting logistics.

The Special Interest Sections (SISs) Student Internship provides a venue for students to learn the inner-workings of these hallmark networking groups, better enabling students to become future professional leaders. This is a remote, unpaid internship and no travel is required. 

What are the responsibilities?

Student interns will participate in monthly SIS virtual meetings and engage with members of their SIS Standing Committee on various projects. Student interns will also have the opportunity to continue and expand upon the SIS Student Intern Collaborative, focused on building clinical reasoning, advocacy, leadership, and communication skills by interacting and educating one another about occupational therapy’s distinct value in each SIS.

Previous interns have collaborated on articles, developed materials and presented during a session at the AOTA Annual Conference & Expo, developed resources for AOTA members, collaborated with the Young Professionals Coordinators, and more.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an occupational therapy or occupational therapy assistant program and must maintain AOTA membership throughout the internship program. They must be students at the time the term begins on July 1, and have at least 1 year remaining in their educational program at that time. Applicants should have a strong desire to be leaders in state or national occupational therapy associations.

How do I apply?

Please email your completed application*, résumé, and AOTA membership number to sis@aota.org. The SIS Standing Committees will review applications and select interns based on preferences and established scoring criteria.

2021 Dates:

Applications are due via email on or before May 10, 2021.
Notifications will be made on or before June 18, 2021.
Term of office will begin July 1, 2021, and end on June 30, 2022.
